Il Ponticello: Formula for longevity
In 2006, ANC’s Executive Class picked Ponti as the “Best Authentic Italian Restaurant in the Country.” It has also been included in The Philippine Tatler’s “Best Restaurants in the Philippines” from 2003 to 2008.
This was a casual, upscale Italian restaurant and neighborhood bar that ran for 15 years. Its unique imprint was integrating personal touches: the owners being football players, their most popular drink was named Azzurri after the Italian national football team. The interiors, commissioned to Lisa Antonio, were crisp and minimalist with Old World flourishes.
The menu was developed by Romeo Garchitorena, a highly accomplished Filipino chef who had lived in Italy for 19 years. Aside from classics like Gorgonzola Pizza, Lamb Ravioli and Angus Salpicao, power-lunchers and casual diners were treated to dishes inspired by Turkey, Morocco, Dubai, and Egypt. On evenings and weekends, the bar was packed.
“Ponti, as its faithful posse calls it, proves that an establishment can withstand shifting.”
-Gino dela Paz, The Philippine Star
